Across history, great civilizations rarely fall solely from external invasion; they crumble from internal moral decay and profound ideological division. In scripture, Satan is described as "the father of lies" (John 8:44) and the accuser whose name (diabolos) literally means "one who divides."
Where God builds unity, order, objective truth, and self-sacrificing love, the spiritual forces of darkness sow confusion, moral relativism, lust, and tribal conflict. The primary strategy of spiritual deception is rarely an immediate, frontal assault on faith. Instead, it is a gradual, multi-century process of shifting norms—normalizing sin, mocking virtue, and isolating individuals from God and neighbor.
Understanding how we arrived at our current state of hyper-division requires looking back across key cultural turning points over the last five centuries.
To understand the Catholic teaching on sex and gender, one must contrast two opposing worldviews of human nature:
1. The 1500s: Fracturing the Anchor of Truth
The Protestant Reformation in 1517 marked a seismic shift in Western civilization. While many reformers were motivated by a desire to correct genuine abuses, the systemic consequence was the fragmentation of Christian unity. By discarding the historic authority of the Church and replacing it with individual interpretation (Sola Scriptura), the moral and doctrinal anchor of the West was broken into thousands of competing denominations, laying the seeds for modern subjectivism.
2. The Late 1800s–Early 1900s: The Rise of Secular Materialism
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thinkers like Karl Marx, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud popularized philosophies that stripped God, sin, and the soul out of human nature:
The Death of Objective Purpose: Humanity was re-defined as merely advanced animals driven by economics, power, and biological instincts rather than divine purpose.
Ethics Separated from God: Society attempted to create morality without God. Once the transcendent anchor was gone, moral standards became subjective human opinions, setting the stage for total cultural revolution.
3. The Mid-to-Late 1900s: Media, Pornography, & The Sexual Revolution
With God removed from public life, the mid-20th century saw the rapid industrialization and normalization of vice through media and culture:
Erosion of Modesty & Sacredness: The cultural shifts of the sexual revolution (including the detachment of sex from marriage via contraception, and the drastic shift toward revealing attire like the bikini in 1946) reduced the body from a sacred temple to an object for casual consumption.
Entertainment & Pornography: Television, music, and a multi-billion-dollar pornography industry co-opted technology to showcase rebellion and promiscuity as normal, while mocking virtue.
4. The Modern Inversion: Calling Evil Good and Good Evil
Today, society has reached the state described by the Prophet Isaiah: "Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness" (Isaiah 5:20).
Sin is no longer merely tolerated; it is celebrated and institutionalized. Conversely, those who hold to natural law, traditional morality, or historic Christian faith are framed as bigoted, backward, or "insane." This moral inversion keeps people in a perpetual state of political rage and spiritual isolation.
Spiritual confusion cannot be defeated with political anger or worldly tactics. St. Paul reminds us: "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness" (Ephesians 6:12).
Reclaiming our culture and restoring unity requires a spiritual strategy:
Uncompromising Loyalty to Objective Truth: Refusing to capitulate to cultural pressures or re-define God's law to fit modern trends.
Reclaiming Modesty and Purity: Guarding our eyes, families, and homes from toxic media and pornography, while restoring reverence for the human body.
Radical Charity: Remembering that people trapped in cultural deception are not the enemy—they are the captives. We must combat division with patience, prayer, and authentic Christian love.
Spiritual Strategy: The enemy works through incremental desensitization, moral confusion, and division to draw souls away from God.
The Historical Arc: The collapse of moral authority (1500s), the erosion of modesty (mid-1900s), and the mass commercialization of sin (late 1900s) directly created today's cultural landscape.
Moral Inversion: Modern culture frequently celebrates disorder while mocking traditional virtue and truth.
Spiritual Weapons: Cultural transformation will not come through political tribalism, but through personal holiness, prayer, courage, and unwavering adherence to God's truth.
