Article 1.10: The Eucharist - Symbol or True Body?
The Story
Suppose your best friend was moving far away to another country.
Before leaving, your friend hands you a photograph and says, "Keep this picture on your desk so you remember me while I'm gone." The photo is a nice symbol, but it isn't your friend. It can't talk to you, hug you, or share a meal with you.
Now imagine if, instead of just giving you a photograph, your friend found a miraculous way to stay right beside you every single day.

That is what Jesus does in the Holy Eucharist:
Jesus Meant What He Said: When Jesus spoke to the crowds in John 6, He didn't say, "This bread is just a picture of me." He said, "My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." When people got confused, He didn't take it back—He doubled down because He was telling the plain truth!
"This IS My Body": At the Last Supper, Jesus took bread and wine and said, "This IS my body... This IS my blood." Through the power of the Holy Spirit at every Mass, the priest repeats Jesus' exact words, and the substance of the bread and wine truly becomes Jesus!
The Source and Summit: When we walk up to receive Holy Communion, we aren't just eating a cracker or playing pretend. We are welcoming Jesus Christ—His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity—straight into our hearts to fill us with His divine life.
💬 Talk About It
Why is receiving Jesus in Holy Communion so much better than just having a photo or a storybook to remember Him by?
How can we prepare our hearts before Mass so we are ready to welcome Jesus when we receive Holy Communion?
