Article 1.6: Is Purgatory Biblical? Merit, Temporal Punishment, and the Cleansing Fire
Story
Imagine you went outside on a rainy day and played in a big mud puddle. You had a blast, but now you are covered in thick, wet mud from head to toe.
When you run up to the front door, your dad opens it, gives you a big hug, and says, "I love you so much! I'm so happy you're home, and you are definitely coming inside to eat dinner with us!" Your dad forgives you for getting messy, and you aren't kicked out of the family.
But does your dad let you jump straight onto your mom's clean white sofa with muddy boots? Of course not!

First, your dad takes you to the porch wash-station, hoses off the mud, and helps you pull off those dirty boots. It might feel a little cold or uncomfortable for a minute while the water rinses off the dirt, but you are smiling the whole time because you know you are going right inside to the party.
That is what Purgatory is:
It’s Strictly for the Saved: Purgatory is not a court where God decides if you go to Heaven or Hell. Everyone in Purgatory is already saved and on their way to Heaven!
Forgiveness vs. Cleaning: When we ask God to forgive our sins, He wipes away our guilt immediately. But sometimes we still have bad habits or messy attachments left over.
The Final Polish: Purgatory is God’s final, loving wash-station. It burns away every last trace of selfishness so we can enter Heaven completely pure, clean, and ready for eternal joy!
💬 Talk About It
Why is it a good thing that God cleans our hearts completely before we enter Heaven?
How can we pray for people who have died and are currently at God's loving "wash-station"?
📜 Memory Verse
"Nothing unclean shall enter it." — Revelation 21:27
